LORETTA NELSON
Loretta Eileen Nelson, 99, of Magnolia, Texas, formerly of Fort Dodge, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023, in Magnolia, Texas.
Services will be 1:30 PM on Monday, February 20, 2023, at the Gunderson Funeral Chapel in Fort Dodge. With burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Fort Dodge.
Loretta is survived by her four children, Marion Cox of Woodland, Texas, Janice Nelson of Gardner, Kansas, Ruby Sherman of Fort Myers, Florida, and Roger Nelson of Spring, Texas; 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Mervin in 1993, grandson Tom Van Ornum, her three sisters Alice, Dorothy, and Betty and her brother Walter.
Loretta Eileen Heun, the daughter of Albert and Charlotte (Lyon) Heun, was born August 4, 1923, in Humboldt County and attended country school through the 8th grade. In the 5th grade she started block quilting of Bible stories that her Grandma Lyon helped her with, all in blue which was her favorite color. On January 4, 1941, Loretta was united in marriage to Mervin Nelson.
She was a member of the Methodist Church and a leader in the Methodist Church's Sunday School. Loretta was active in the Badger Saddle Club and enjoyed motorcycles, card club, riding horses, sewing, and quilting.
You could find Loretta outside raking the yard, mowing, or driving a tractor. She loved being helpful to her family and her friends. Cooking, baking, or decorating cakes was a joy for her. She loved that she could make wedding cakes, birthday cakes and decorate them for her children and grandchildren.
